No matter your role, training is an ongoing process at 3 Day Blinds. The Design Consultants in Tony Valli’s region of San Francisco and Northern California had a treat last week when Judeann Glover, our Director of Training and Development brought her workshop on maintaining relationships with past customers to their team meeting. It was very interactive, and a lot of fun! Above is a team picture taken afterwards.
Yesterday, Dave Hall, CEO of 3 Day Blinds, and his wife, Jackie invited Dave’s direct reports, along with their families, to their ocean front home on the Newport Beach Peninsula. In all, 30 people showed up, and we spent some fun time getting to know our co-worker’s kids and spouses, playing in the sand, as well as enjoying some delicious food and drink. The weather was great, the sunset was gorgeous, and it was a wonderful time. Thanks Dave and Jackie!
I had the pleasure of attending the 3 Day Blinds Los Angeles Team Meeting in our showroom in Santa Monica yesterday. The main purpose was to review our new Custom Drapery and Soft Roman Shade program, introduced a month ago.
I LOVED the energy and the interest… this group of window treatments super stars were incredibly interested in learning how they can create the perfect look with these new products for their clients, as I would expect… but what really impressed me is how dedicated they are to working as a team to help each other succeed!
It takes an amazing person to excell as a window treatments designer. These folks have a great eye for design, deep product knowledge of the materials, operating systems and functionality of the more than 1000 custom products we offer, technical abilities that allow them to take perfect measurements to ensure a perfect fit, project management skills to ensure that their clients’ expectations are met from inspiration to installation, and great people skills as well!

Sure, the Oscars were on TV Sunday night. But many in the window treatments business missed seeing them, because they were on long flights from places around the globe to converge on Rolladen+Tore 2012 (or R+T as we call it) in Stuttgart, Germany, for the Big International Event in our industry that happens only once every 3 years.
There is no red carpet, and here the products are the stars – primarily blinds, shades and shutters; this is where 500 companies representing a myriad of countries come to show off their latest designs, materials, components, machinery and advertising materials at Messe Stuttgart, a large venue with 8 halls.
Karin Jeske and Jenni Su represented 3 Day Blinds at R+T. Our objectives were to look for new suppliers, materials and components to bring back to help enhance our line which includes over 1000 custom blinds, shades and shutters, and to have face to face meetings with some of our important suppliers.
Many exhibitors have elaborate booths to show off their wares. Hunter Douglas, our largest supplier, also had one of the largest displays at the show.
Of course, one of the best aspects of attending R+T is seeing everyone in one place. Here are just a few pictures from our 3 days at the fair:
On January 3rd, we announced that Dave Hall was “taking over the leadership of 3 Day Blinds,” but yesterday we received the good news that this decision has been formalized, and that he is now officially our new CEO! “Dave Hall has won our complete confidence and I am excited to announce on behalf of the Board of Directors that we have named him CEO of 3 Day Blinds,” said Tim Burke in a special conference call with the 3 Day Blinds management team. “We unanimously agreed that Dave is by far the most qualified candidate to lead your team as you continue to exceed even our most optimistic forecasts.”
We never had any doubt that this day would come. Dave was responsible for implementing many of the strategies that caused our tremendous growth in 2011, and as Tim indicated, the momentum has continued in 2012. “Everyone is so excited about the news,” said Tikie Holewski, SVP. “I have heard from the whole senior management team and from associates throughout the Irvine Support Center and across the country, in the field. Now that we all know that Dave’s role is set in stone, we can fully focus on implementing all of our growth plans.”
Dave had just arrived back from a memorable family trip to visit his daughter in Rome (which had been planned before the January announcement) where she is currently attending college when he received the good news. Hopefully he enjoyed that break, because we don’t antipate any big vacations any time soon!

OK, our new Draperies and Soft Roman Shades are not literally on fire, but they ARE selling like hotcakes! This morning, the 3 Day Blinds VP of Sales, Scott Mendez (who incidentally had an important birthday this week that involved a zero) had a conference call with all 200 of our Design Consultants, to recognize the outstanding performance of the team overall, and to call out a few individuals who had particularly successful weeks, thanks to our new products!
Lori Patnode, who serves Seattle and Renton, WA was recognized for placing the first order. In fact, it came in immediately after our IT team flipped the switch that allowed our Designers to specify the product on their laptops to provide an instant quote for their clients in the home. “I could not WAIT to begin selling this product,” says Lori. “For this first order, my client, who lives in one of the most beautiful homes in my community and has very discriminating taste, immediately fell in love with one of the fabrics and HAD to have it custom-made in one of our beautiful Soft Roman Shade styles. She is accustomed to working with interior designers for her custom fabric treatments, and she was shocked by how low our prices are and how quickly we can deliver.”
Lora Remlinger, who is our Design Consultant in St. Louis, has had the largest single order for our new products. “I am so excited because our product offering is now complete! Draperies and Soft Shades offer a myriad of new choices for our clients and new ways for us to tie the window treatments to the rest of the room. I love color and design, and this program makes it easy for me to confidently deliver a designer look. The style and quality of these new, made-in-the-USA, custom-made window treatments simply can’t be replicated with off-the-shelf products, and there is something for everyone in this assortment,” says Lora.
Lora was recognized again because she and Debi Barish who serves the Newport Beach, CA area, tied for first place in the number of orders placed for new products this week; 3 orders each! “I need to be versatile, because my client base in Orange County, CA is extremely diverse. In a typical week I may work with clients in a beachfront mansion, a golf course property, a sprawling ranch, a craftsman-style cottage, a boutique hotel, a mountain hideaway, a brand-new tract home, a dentist’s office, and a modern condo. After working with these new products for a week, I can say that our clients universally LOVED our new fabric and product selection, and I am thrilled to be able to offer these new style options to my clients,” says Debi.
Speaking of ranches, back at ours, in Irvine, CA we did a little celebrating of our own. Tikie Holewski, SVP, and Ed Scott, SVP of Info Technology recognized the whole team, with special kudos for Amber Neeley, Cristin Harrigan, Judeann Glover, Kevin Sanders, Mary Kay Stam, Max Luong, Natalie Niverson and Rosa Aguirre, a few individuals who made key contributions to pulling this whole thing off, and surprised the entire office all with a lovely sparkling cider toast!
Unexpectedly, a few of us even got rewarded with something a little more “real”!
Jeff Luzadder , who skillfully programmed the new products into our point-of-sale system, and hid a lot of sophisticated calculations in the background to make these products easy and foolproof for our designers to specify, while sending accurate job tickets at lightning speed to the factory floor, was awarded a bottle of Silver Patron Tequila. It was definitely appreciated, but we’re not quite sure it will make up for the fact that his kids may not recognize him now, after the long hours he dedicated to this project!
Jenni Su accepted a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne for herself, and another on behalf of her sidekick, Ashley Ragland (who was “grounded” during this part of the celebration, in her cubicle, by an important conference call). Jenni and Ashley worked tirelessly to pull together the perfect fabric line from textile mills around the globe, define specifications with our factory, create the sample books and develop training materials for the new products. Of course, they are already busy planning our next product update!
Your blogger, Karin Jeske, also received a nice bottle of champagne, and she acknowledged the role that Ed Scott played in ensuring a near-flawless IT deployment, key to the program success.
We then proceeded to devour a myriad of pies in at least a dozen flavors, in honor of Scott’s birthday.
A lunch at Javier’s for the core team also took place, and in case you were wondering, despite the fact that no one offered to crack open the “gift” they had been presented, contrary to what the photo implies, we were allowed to order a little bit more than water! When we arrived, we must have looked like we were going to produce a lot of loud laughter, because they put us at a table surrounded by a 10-foot wall – this was no doubt appreciated by their other customers.

The best-of-the-best rolled into town yesterday for dinner at Montage, in Laguna Beach, and a meeting this morning with the 3 Day Blinds Board of Directors! These are our most successful Design Consultants; the ones who have served the most clients by providing their fabulous product recommendations for custom blinds, shades and shutters, and ensuring a trouble-free experience.
At the meeting this morning, each Design Consultant described to our board of directors and executive management team, the secrets to their success: some common themes included building relationships in their community, both with other businesses and clients, the great marketing tools provided by the folks in the Irvine Support Center, the products that are constantly being refreshed and their confidence that they have a top notch company standing behind them to deliver on all of the promises they make.
Mary George, a board member, listened intently, and observed that each Design Consultant, in their own way, expressed that they love their job and look forward to the new adventure each day working with clients brings.
Collectively, the members of the board expressed what an honor it was to be in the presense of “the most important people in the company, those who work face to face with our clients.”

Promotions from within are a frequent occurrence here at 3 Day Blinds, but the announcement by our board of directors that our CFO, Dave Hall, was being promoted to COO and taking the reins of our company, was met with extra delight and enthusiasm by all. Dave joined us about a year ago, after spending 15 years with GES Exposition Services, a company with nearly one billion in revenue, serving in many roles, including CFO and COO.
When he arrived at 3 Day Blinds, Dave immediately immersed himself in every aspect of our exciting custom window treatments business, and it was amazing how fast he caught on to all we do, from procuring raw materials for manufacturing our custom blinds and shades, to providing world class service to our clients. All of us in management immediately felt as if we had a new partner to help us improve our part of the business and we appreciated his keen insight and ability to make things happen, not to mention his slightly sarcastic sense of humor!
After the announcement was made, Dave spoke before the team in Irvine, and by phone to all of our designers, showroom personnel and manufacturing team: “I am thrilled to lead 3 Day Blinds. 2011 was incredibly successful for us, and 2012 will be even more exciting. We have an outstanding team in place, and our rapid growth is allowing us to provide our excellent service to more clients every day and offering great career opportunities for our employees as well.”
OK, so we’ve established that he is totally qualified and is backed by a great team… is there more to know? Yes! As of tomorrow, Dave has been married to Jackie (who just outfitted their beautiful home in Honeycomb Shades by 3 Day Blinds) for 28 years, and they have 2 children, Justin, 22 and Paige,19. He loves hiking, skiing, travel and the outdoors and expresses his creativity by being a darn good photographer!
