Tips My Dad Taught Me About the Home

happy father's day

The modern day mother and father now comes in various forms. No longer are fathers the traditional married breadwinner and disciplinarian in the family. My family is a product of the times, where my dad and mom wore many hats and often had overlapping roles. In honor of Father’s Day, here are a few tips my dad taught me about making a home that I am forever thankful for.

Tips My Dad Taught Me School Lunch

School Lunches

As a child I was always jealous of the kids that got to buy lunch from the cafeteria. Looking back, I am extremely grateful I didn’t have to eat half defrosted chicken nuggets every day. Thank you, Dad. Yes, my dad made my siblings and I lunches every day for school because my mom worked early in the morning and that’s just how it worked out. What I remember the most about these lunches was the little notes he would put in them with loving and encouraging words. This continued into my high school years and if I could, I would have had my dad make me lunches in college. Judge if you want but you haven’t tried one of my dad’s PB & J’s. The best part was, Dad gives not one but two gummy snacks… and if Mom asked about them, the extra was to… “share with our friends”!

Tips my dad taught me- lawn mowing

While most people hire gardeners to upkeep their landscape, my Dad to this day does it all. How my Dad keeps his lawn the greenest on block I will never know, but he did teach my brother and I how to push a lawn mower around. It was probably my least favorite summer, ever. Every two weeks my brother and I had the pleasure of taking turns on lawn duty. Looking back, I see my dad was trying to teach us discipline, hard work and responsibility around the house, all characteristics that I hope to instill in my kids someday.

Comfortable Furniture

It is truly comical to go furniture shopping with my dad. Without fail, he always gravitates towards the biggest, brownest, most comfortable couch on the sale rack. I’m certainly not praising my dad’s eye for home decor, but rather appreciating his practical nature. If it was solely up to my Mom we would have been sitting on a designer couch that’s hard as bricks, and nothing is worse than that. With that in mind, my parents would meet somewhere in the middle between aesthetics and comfort. So thank you Dad for allowing me to come home from soccer practice and relax on a little slice of heaven after a long day.

Tips my dad taught me cleaning blinds

Clean Blinds and Widows

Now my dad wouldn’t want me to use the word obsession, but for lack of a better term, I’m going to. My dad is obsessed with cleaning windows and blinds. This wasn’t like a spring cleaning type thing, it was more like an every two weeks take off all the window screens and apply dusting spray to all of the blinds type of thing. Another one of my favorite pastimes growing up, window and blinds cleaning day! I can hear my dad now, “do you want to be sick from breathing in all that dust and all those germs? Get cleaning.”  On a serious note, thanks to my dad I now have a phobia of a cloud of dust blanketing my blinds. If you’re reading this and starting to taste the dust you’re breathing in from your blinds, check out 3 Day Blinds window treatment cleaning tips to put your mind and lungs at ease.

Tips my dad taught me- home with character

 Embrace a Home’s Character

One weekend my Mom was out of town and my brother and I were fairly young and spent the day painting on canvases outside on our driveway. When Dad went inside to watch the rest of the football game, my brother and I got creative and took the paint to the driveway. We then invited our neighbors over to join in on the fun and before we knew it looked like one of Michelangelo’s masterpieces covering the driveway. Accept our angels were depicted with dragons, leprechauns and unicorns, but same idea.

Amidst our creative paint session my father came out to check on us, I don’t recall his initial reaction but I distinctly remember him partaking in the painting activity. Needless to say when my Mom returned she was furious but my Dad somehow  was able to convince her that the art brought our house character. For one whole year I was able to brag about being the house on the street with the driveway adorned with angels and dragons. While this was an extreme incident of character in a home I think every home has a little bit of character that makes their house a home and I appreciate that my Dad embraced this.

These are just a few tips my father taught me growing up about homemaking that I will forever cherish. 3 Day Blinds wishes all the dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!

Cool Home Design Ideas

Cool Home Design Ideas

With so many cool home design options out there, it can be difficult to decide how to decorate your space to make it your own. Your home is your refuge. It should be functional, comfortable, and reflect your personal style.

Possible sources of design theme inspiration include favorite historical time periods, your best-loved hobbies, cultures you’re interested in, or your favorite vacation spots. With some careful consideration, you can create a place that you’ll be happy to call home.

Time Capsules

History is rich with design inspiration. If you’re enamored with the opulence and warmth of the Victorian Era style, you’re not alone. This popular design style employs deep reds, rich greens, and golds, patterns inspired by nature and ornate, often sturdily crafted furniture, generally made of dark woods. Window treatments from this era were usually of the “soft” variety, such as sheer curtains in rooms where natural light was desired, and luxurious drapery panels in areas where privacy and a more stately look was desired.

If you’re taking a slightly newer page from the history book, you can draw inspiration from retro styles from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Homes decorated in this style typically use lots of earthy base colors, accented by citrus tones, and deep purple and electric blues.

Retro-futuristic designs, in the vein of Arne Jacobsen’s iconic design language pair well with this look, as do Vertical Blinds and Mini Blinds in bold colors.

Vacation at Home

After arriving back home from a great vacation, it can be difficult to return to the daily grind. Fortunately, you can keep a little bit of that adventurous spirit with you by bringing it into your interior design.

Mix Woven Wood Shades with bold animal prints, subtle browns, grays, and whites, and classic furniture in complementary colors to add an exotic African feel to your living room.

Patterned ceramic tiles; rustic, textured walls; and bright, but natural colors can all be put together to create a festive Latin American theme. For window treatments, opt for bright, color-coordinated curtains, or Wood Horizontal Blinds with complementary accent tapes.

Follow Your Muse

Maybe you’re a retail manager by day, and a rock star by night. Or perhaps you’re a web designer with a burning passion for developing your own photos. Most of us have an artistic side, and it can be a great source of inspiration when designing your home.

Perhaps your home office needs a little more rock ’n’ roll. Checkerboard floors, framed posters of classic album covers, and a red Stratocaster guitar mounted proudly on the wall are all good places to start. Add some wide-slat metallic Mini Blinds, and you’re ready to rock.

Those photos you have stashed away in your attic or basement deserve to be seen. Frame your black and white photographs in clean, contemporary frames and create a modern, minimal space that embraces gray scale. The striking lines and visual repetition of Vertical Blinds might be just the thing to really make it work.

Summer Entertaining Appetizers

In my many years of entertaining I was completely in the dark when it came to the anatomy of a cheese plate. Typically my approach when creating a cheese plate was- make it look pretty… I it never occurred to me that there was a science behind the presentation of the food but turns out this makes a lot of sense. These appetizers are perfectly complementary to one another in both taste and texture. Organization of these items is key too; you don’t want guests reaching across one another for bread that is on the opposite side of the cheese wheel.

Ideal Rooms for Moisture-Resistant Blinds

Style is a primary concern when choosing window treatments. You want your new window coverings to complement your design aesthetic, and new blinds can really make your décor look great.

However, looks are not the only concern, especially when it comes to rooms that have a lot of moisture. Excess humidity can shorten the life of your window treatments, especially if you choose to install a type that is not well suited for the task.

The Home Is a Proving Ground

Kitchens can really test the longevity of blinds. Variations in humidity levels are a regular occurrence in the kitchen, as are fluctuations in temperature, not to mention the wide variety of aromas. Window treatments near a stove or sink are especially vulnerable.

The bathroom is another room where moisture-resistant blinds are a must. The privacy and light control offered by your new blinds won’t last long if the bathroom’s constantly fluctuating moisture levels ruin them.

And, let’s face it: as adorable as they are, kids are messy. Spills, spontaneous art projects, and other mishaps can all take a toll on the window treatments in a child’s room.

Last but not least, laundry rooms and finished basements are also parts of the home where moisture resistance should be taken into account when choosing window treatments.

Form and Function

If you’re looking for moisture-resistant blinds, 3 Day Blinds has you covered. Faux Wood Blinds are a great choice in areas where moisture or messes are a concern. They are durable, water-resistant, affordable and easy to clean. They resist cracking, fading, warping and peeling, and as a bonus, they sport the rich appearance of natural wood blinds.

Our clean, chic Vertical Blinds are attractive and energy efficient. They make a great statement on a large picture window or sliding glass door. Not only that, but they are also available in durable vinyl, which stands up very well to humidity and is virtually maintenance-free.

3 Day Blinds’ Vinyl Blinds are as easy on the budget as they are on the eyes. They offer excellent privacy and plenty of light control. They make the perfect partner for our vinyl verticals, and as one might expect, they are nearly impervious to moisture and messes.

Office Shades

6 Rooms in Need of Shades | 3 Day Blinds

These 6 rooms are all unique in style and look fantastic but they all are missing one crucial item… Shades!

Bedroom Shades

With a uniquely designed bedroom layout typically comes unique windows. Who wouldn’t want to lay in bed and watch the sunset or gaze at the stars? That’s all great but can you imagine with the sun beats down into this room? Yikes. That’s why shades are a must. I selected an array of  3 Day Blinds Roller Shades and Woven Wood Shades to complement the eclectic theme of this space.

Kitchen Nook Shades

Kitchen Nook Shades

I adore this kitchen nook but without shades, this space looks unfinished. Typically I wouldn’t suggest continuing the same wall color on shades but in this instance I think it works. With the thick white molding and white furnishings this space can definitely get away with pulling out one of the different yellow tones in a shade. Any of these Roller Shades or Soft Roman Shades would be the perfect finishing touch to this space.

Kitchen Shades

Kitchen Shades

This kitchen definitively takes a minimalist approach, so minimalist that it doesn’t have shades! This rustic kitchen needs some window treatments to give it a more homey appeal. I selected 3 Day Blinds Roman Shades to add visual warmth to this space. The two black shades would add sophistication and formality to this kitchen, while the shade of a blend of earth tones  would give this room a rich, natural look.

Office Shades

Office Shades

Muted blue, white and pop of red, this is a great color pallet. What this space is missing is texture. The Soft Roman Shades and Roller Shades I selected for this office are both vibrant in color and pattern and would elevate the decor of this space.

Living Room Shades

Living Room Shades

The missing element in this traditional living room is a classic Cellular Shade or Roller Shade. Unlike the office pictured above this space has a lot of texture, from the rock tiled wall to the intricate pillows and wall fixtures. Because this room already has a lot going on a solid shade would complement this space best and just add a more finished look.

Bathroom Shades

Bathroom Shades

No one wants to be watched while bathing, even it if is just by the birds and the bees. This bathroom is in desperate need for shades that provide a bit of privacy. This bathroom already has a formal look to it so I selected Soft Roman Shades that would elevate this spaces elegance.

These 6 rooms are all very different styles but each are in need 3 Day Blinds Shades to complete their looks. If you’re space is in need of shades or any window treatments 3 Day Blinds has the most current styles that complement any rooms decor.
