It’s the “Year of the Rabbitt” at 3 Day Blinds – Our Year to Jump Ahead!

Kevin Rabbitt, CEO, 3 Day Blinds

February 3rd marks the Chinese New Year, and according to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the Rabbit.

Our board of directors is looking pretty smart!  In April of 2010 they named Kevin Rabbitt the new CEO of 3 Day Blinds, so 2011 will be Kevin’s first full year as our president.   And we are not referring just to his last name…  we can also reference the incredible progress we have made as a company under his leadership.

According to an interesting article by Rhonda Abrams of USA Today, in the Chinese Zodiac, each year is associated with one of twelve animals, and each animal brings different influences that are said to affect the entire 12 month period.  Each year, over a billion people around the world celebrate Chinese New Year.

This is a list of what Ms. Abrams reports we can expect in The Year of the Rabbit, and how we think these themes relate to our business at 3 Day Blinds:

  • At first, our 2011 sales forecast looked impossibly aggressive… but if January is a good indication, like rabbits, we’re on track to jump ahead of the goals we set and take 3 Day Blinds to new sales levels.  Greg Bibas, SVP, Marketing is leading the charge to find more customers through better marketing.
  • Jeff Miller, our VP of Client Care surveys every customer, and they are already giving us outstanding ratings in our ability to suggest great products, provide fast service and professional installation –  but our goal is to continue to improve these scores.
  • We have 12 fantastic District Sales Managers, and through the friendly competition that is facilitated by their leader, Scott Pickard, SVP of Sales, they are ALL reaching new levels, and determined to be the best!
  • Our plans for product development are ambitious also.  Together, Frank Gutierrez, SVP, Manufacturing and Supply Chain, and  Karin Miller, SVP, Merchandising (your blogger) have lots of great new blinds, shades and shutters in the pipeline to add to our already great assortment of window treatments.
  • Scott Hurtik, VP, Information Technology and his team have a long list of ambitious projects to help facilitate better client care, clearer supplier communications, superior reporting and more efficient manufacturing.
  • Tikie Holewski, SVP, Human Resources and her team are aggressively recruiting new Design Consultants to meet our ambitious sales forecast (click here to see current opportunities).
  • Carrie Galvin, SVP, Business Development is looking at new ways to grow our business and delight even more customers. She has a ton of good ideas and is working on identifying the best opportunities.

Good Communication

  • Again, Kevin was ahead of the curve, because one of his goals when he joined the company was to improve communications, both internally and externally.
  • Our Client Care Team has reached out to ALL of our former customers by telephone in the last 6 months to make sure that they were still satisfied with our products and service.
  • Through Kevin’s Town Hall meetings, employees are well-informed about company goals and how their role fits into the big picture.
  • Our Supply Chain Team has made great improvements in our communications with our valued vendors from around the world, who provide us with materials and components.
  • We started the 3 Day Blinds Blog to facilitate faster and more personal communication to our customers and employees.

  • We’ve proven we can endure.  Sadly, many in our industry have not weathered the current economic downturn, and we at 3 Day Blinds have had to make some changes and sacrifices in order to become more efficient.  Thankfully, these changes have made us stronger; we are now thriving, and are grateful for our success, but we never take it for granted.  Every day is a new day to do our best to satisfy our customers!

Luck & Money Made Easily

  • Our custom blinds, shades and shutters have such great quality and style, sometimes we get lucky and they practically sell themselves.  But the truth is, most of our customers need the expertise of our Design Consultants (provided in the client’s home, free-of-charge) to help them choose the best window treatments for their specific needs and budget.  It typically takes 1-2 hours to select the products, take accurate measurements, provide a quote and arrange for professional installation of the window coverings.  Then, everyone at the factory hustles to get the product made, through quality control and out the door the next day.  Hardly like winning the lottery, but fortunately we love our work.  So, we’ll definitely take any luck and easy money we can get, but we’re a bit skeptical about this one, and we’re certainly not counting on it!

So, if your New Year’s resolution is to finally cover those naked windows, or replace those tattered curtains, call us at 877-614-3329 to schedule your free in-home design consultation.  We promise that “You’ll Love The Treatment”!

In conclusion, we at 3 Day Blinds, we would like to wish everyone who reads this GOOD LUCK and PROSPERITY in The Year of the Rabbit!

Angie Hicks, Angie’s List FounderKevin Rabbitt, our CEO, announced that we received some great news today.  The members of Angie’s List have given 3 Day Blinds so many great reviews, that they awarded us their coveted Super Service Award for 2010, which puts us in the top 5% of companies that they rate!  All award winners have met strict eligibility requirements including earning a minimum number of reports, an exemplary rating from their customers and abiding by Angie’s List operational guidelines.

Angie’s List was founded by Angie Hicks in 1995, and she is now at the helm of one of the nation’s fastest growing private companies.  They have over one million paid subscribers who share information with each other about companies that they do business with.  Reviews are provided on the Angie’s List website or over the phone, and they also publish a monthly magazine with tips and special discounts for homeowners, that we love to look at.

“Our Super Service Award winners are the cream of the crop when it comes to providing consistently high quality customer service, as judged by the customers who hired them,”  according to Ms. Hicks.

We love to read the reviews that our clients write about us on Angie’s List.  What they most often emphasize is the professional service they received from our team of Design Consultants, and the great product recommendations that they make.  Click here to read reviews that were submitted directly to our corporate office.

Customer Recommendation for Dane Tasaka

Our experience with 3 Day Blinds was outstanding.

I had pre-shopped on the website several months earlier, and even visited the store to see the products first hand. When we were finally financially ready to make the purachase, we had the 3 Day Blinds Design Consultant come to the house to measure. We again reviewed our purchase choices and needs, and actually decidd to go with a different product that saved us a lot of month.

The blinds arrived in record time, and the installation instructions were easy to follow, allowing us to get our blinds up in no time.

There were two small problems with our order. First, one set of brackets arrived in the wrong color, but they were replaced immediately. Second, the control wand for the blinds was either not included or lost in the packing. Again, the part was replaced immediately.

We still have parts of our home needing blinds, but it has been nice to be able to order in sections and know that the company and products will still be around.

I would highly recommedng 3 Day Blinds and Dane Tasaka.

Customer Recommendation for Sandra Dunn

I’ve been wanting to let you know how much I love my blinds!

First of all, I must tell you how much I enjoyed working with you! After spending a few minutes listening to my likes/dislikes and discussing my budget, you knew immediately what would work for my living room, dining room, and office window treatments. You helped me make great color choices as well!

I was thinking the process of picking, ordering, and installing window coverings would take a few weeks. I was shocked when within an hour you helped me pick out all of my coverings. Not to mention how quickly the blinds came and were installed. My husband could not believe when he came home from work just 3 days after me telling him I had ordered window coverings, and there they were, already hung and looking beautiful!

Thank you again for your help! I will certianly pass on your business information to any friends that are in need of window treatments. Know too that when the time comes to do the rest of the windows in my house, I will be calling you!!

Day 3 at Heimtextil: What are the Home Fashions Design and Color Trends for 2011 and Beyond?

The trend forum from Heimtex 2011.Looking at my current and old passports, it seems that I have attended Heimtextil 15 out of the last 22 years.  Whenever I return, I am always asked “what are the new trends in home fashions?” and “what are the new home furnishing colors?”  The first time I attended, I thought everything that looked new to me was a trend that I needed to address.  Gradually, I realized that certain companies and countries that exhibit have “a look” that is their signature, and that it won’t necessarily apply to the US market or to my product, window treatments.

It is no secret that home furnishings trends don’t evolve as quickly as categories like junior apparel. For most products, we don’t have major seasonal differences.  The mega-trends change over the course of several years.  And consumers are more willing to make bigger fashion statements with products that have shorter life cycles, such as candles and decorative pillows than they are with major appliances and broadloom carpet, which are longer term commitments.

Another view of the Trend Forum at Heimtextil 2011.

I think of window treatments as a medium-term commitment.  Our research shows that consumers usually change their window treatments every seven years on average.

So, what are the design and color trends for 2011 and beyond?  The producers of Heimtextil do some of the work for us, by bringing in fashion forecasting experts to put together a trend report and exhibition, and an even larger group to make presentations.  The official exhibition was a collaboration among 6 trend forecasting companies:  Baolab, Italy, Bora.Hurke, Stilburo, Germany, Carlin International, France, Dan Project, Japan, Stijlinstituut, Holland,  LS:N Global, Great Britain.  I also attended presentations by Gottfried Pank, Agnes Elisabelar, and Anne Marie Commandeur.

The over-arching theme for the official Heimtextil 2011 trend report is “Reconnect”.  The sub-themes are “Sobriety”, “Mix Mash”, “Utility” and “Wilderness”.  Using these themes, I will combine what I gleaned from this excellent presentation with other lectures I attended, as well as what I observed while walking the show floor.

In reaction to the global economic downturn, consumers are looking for “useful things that last”, and comforting influences, quality classics, fine finishes and “minimal luxury”.  Agnes mentioned a return to Shaker Style in this context. The color palette includes muted mid-tones across the color spectrum, mixed with taupe and black.  Read more…

Mix Mash

The layering of “kitschy trash with precious treasure”, the movement toward celebrating local crafts and customs, but also boldly mixing color and pattern in new ways.  We have been talking about “no matchy-matchy” for years, but this takes pattern mixing to a new, even more eclectic, fun and sophisticated level.    Hand-made and experimental materials are celebrated, as a “cultural hybrid”.  Using traditional manufacturing techniques with high-tech materials also comes into play.  The color palette is made up of neon brights mixed with neutrals and darks.  Read more…

This trend deals with a backlash against rampant consumerism and a desire for “voluntary simplicity”, a philosophy that embraces back-to-basics.  The “industrial aesthetic” and products that are meant to stand the test of time are back in vogue.  Makeshift, imperfection and utility are keywords associated with this trend.  Colors include neutrals and darks with a splash of primary red and yellow.  Read more…

This trend is driven by a need to disconnect, specifically, from technology.  “Primitive Raw” celebrates raw, rough and unfinished surfaces.  A renewed interest in hand-made textile techniques including braiding, knotting and weaving.  Chunky knits are everywhere.  “Untamed Nature” references interlocking, matted and random patterns found in nature, interpreted in textiles and other products.  Colors are spicy, ranging from mid-tones to darks.  Read more…

CONGRATULATIONS to all who participated in putting this wonderful trend presentation together for Heimtextil 2011!

An Authentic German Night Out in Frankfurt

Vivian Kanargelidis and Philip Cappello of Sun Glow Window Coverings, Totonto, Ontario, CanadaLast night we had a nice dinner with 30 others from a collection of companies in the window coverings industry, hosted by Almedahls and Rollease, at an authentic German restaurant called Baseler Eck in Frankfurt, Germany.  We had a great time at our table, but were, unfortunately, not able to keep up when it came to singing traditional Swedish songs.

Customer Recommendation for Andrea Pocquette

Andrea has done three jobs for us over the past year and a half. The jobs were complicated in that we have unusual sized and placed windows, and we didn’t know exactly how they should be treated. She gave us great ideas and choices. In fact, we could not have finished our new house without her help. She quoted us very fair prices and arranged for prompt installation.

We could not be more satisfied.

Day 2 at Heimtextil: How do our Window Treatments fit into the Home?

The Teba/Luxaflex booth in the window coverings hall where products from the European division of Hunter Douglas, a partner of 3 Day Blinds, are featured.

One thing we love about Heimtex is that it gives us a chance to look at the new window treatments innovations across Europe and around the world.

But we also love seeing all of the other home furnishings products, and thinking about how our window treatments fit into the picture.  There are 17 halls at Heimtex, that feature not just blinds, shades, shutters and draperies, but products for tabletop, kitchen, bath, upholstery, furniture, rugs, carpets, and wallcoverings.

On day 2, Jenni and I covered most of the halls.  By the end of the day, my pedometer said that we had taken 25,000 steps!

If you were not lucky enough to attend Heimtex this year, the photos below are intended to help you understand what the experience is like.
